Vintage Conditions
How to Read Our Condition Markers
Every vintage piece carries a history. Signs of age are not flaws to hide—they’re part of what makes each item unique. Gentle wear, softened finishes, and the marks of time are often what give vintage pieces their character. Rather than striving for perfection, we strive for transparency: carefully noting and photographing visible wear so you can make informed, confident decisions.
To create consistency across our collection, we use a clear system to identify and define common signs of wear. Product pages will include visual markers and close-up images where applicable.
These markers are designed to be clear, consistent, and honest—so you always know exactly what you’re bringing into your home.
Structural Condition
A small area where material is missing.
- Most commonly found along rims, edges, or corners
- May feel rough or uneven to the touch. Might be referred to as "fleabite" chip, in which case the chip is usually too small to be noticeable, but can still be felt.
- Size and placement vary
Note: Minor chips are common in vintage and often reflected in pricing
A visible break that extends into the material.
- Typically noticeable to both the eye and touch
- May affect durability or function
- Often runs across or through a piece
Best for: Display or light use depending on severity
A very fine, narrow crack.
- Appears as a thin line, often only visible in certain light
- Usually not raised or separated
- Does not appear open or gapped
Note: A hairline is more subtle than a crack, but still worth noting
Oxidation on iron or steel components.
- Reddish-brown spotting or texture
- Often found on metal handles, rims, or joints
Note: May progress over time if not treated
Surface Condition
A network of fine lines within the glaze.
- Resembles a delicate spiderweb pattern
- Found in glazed ceramics
- Does not affect the underlying structure
Note: Crazing is a natural result of aging and is common in older pieces
Surface-level marks from use.
- Typically appear as fine lines or light scuffs
- Most visible under direct light
- Do not penetrate deeply into the material
Note: Light scratching is expected in well-loved vintage items
Natural discoloration of metal over time.
- Appears as darkening, dullness, or uneven tone
- Common on silver, brass, and النحاس
Note: Tarnish can often be reduced or removed with polishing
Aging & Character
Soft, natural wear that develops with age.
- Gentle fading of color or design
- Subtle tonal shifts or warmth
- Light wear on raised or frequently handled areas
Includes:
- Transferware designs that have gradually softened over time
- Slight mellowing of once-bright surfaces
- Even, blended signs of use
Note: Patina is often considered desirable and adds to the character of a piece
A Note on Vintage Condition
Vintage items are, by nature, pre-owned. While we carefully curate and inspect each piece, signs of age should be expected.
We aim to:
- Highlight anything notable
- Provide clear, close-up images
- Use consistent terminology across all listings
If you ever have questions about a specific item, we're always happy to take a closer look. Just ask!
Understanding Vintage, Transparently
Production methods, materials, and safety standards have evolved over time. Because of this, some vintage kitchen and dining items may contain materials or finishes that are no longer commonly used in modern production.
Examples can include:
- Lead in glazes or paints
- Uranium in certain decorative glassware
- Other materials historically used in manufacturing processes
While we carefully curate and inspect each piece for condition, we are not able to independently test items for the presence of specific substances or certify them as food-safe.
We encourage customers to research vintage materials and make informed decisions based on their own comfort level and intended use. Some customers choose to use vintage pieces for everyday dining, while others prefer decorative or occasional use only.
As always, please do what feels right for you and your family.
Our Philosophy
We believe in transparency over perfection. Every mark tells part of the story—and we want you to feel confident bringing that story into your home.
